The Astra replaced the Viva in 1980 whilst sales of the Chevette continued until 1984. The Astra was a big leap forward: an angular hatchback design, sweet overhead camshaft engines, a spacious interior and much better ergonomics . Of course in many incarnations the Astra was to become a National favourite which stayed in production and sold well for many decades. The Mk 1 was heavily restyled in 1984 adopting the jelly mould look of the Ford Sierra. Consequently, not many Mk1s survive.
