The cars of the late 1930s are sadly underrated and misunderstood. The decade saw a terrific advance from the lumbering and hard to drive machines of the previous decade.
This Wolseley which has enjoyed considerable screen fame is a classic example : it has a smooth and willing 6 cylinder engine and with synchromesh and reasonable brakes it is genuinely good to drive and pleasant to be driven in. This was one of a number to be used in Foyle’s War albeit with different number plates riveted on top of the real ones. So whether you want to emulate Michael Kitchen or his chauffeuse Honeysuckle Weeks, this is a drive back to a time when comfort and speed became much more accessible.
