Launched in 1976, the Rover SD1 was a bold and modern design, combining a sleek wedge-shaped profile with the practicality of a large hatchback. In 3.5-litre Vitesse guise, it offered impressive performance and effortless long-distance cruising, helping it become one of Britain’s most memorable executive cars.
The motoring press loved it, naming it European Car of the Year in 1977, but production challenges and build quality issues meant its reputation never quite matched its potential. Despite this, the SD1 remains an icon of British motoring and holds a special place in automotive history as the last passenger car built at Rover’s Solihull plant, where it was produced from 1976 to 1986.
